Friends of RedGate Park Annual 2024 Report

This year, Friends of RedGate Park achieved remarkable progress in advocating for RedGate Park’s enhancement, environmental preservation, and community engagement. With the support of dedicated volunteers, community members, and partners, we strengthened our relationship with local government, expanded our environmental initiatives, and grew our outreach efforts to increase park visitation and stewardship.

Highlights include successfully advocating for RedGate Park to be officially designated as an arboretum within the City of Rockville with over 2,000 native trees planted in the park this year to support the arboretum. We have also expanded community communications to reach over 900 residents via email and promoted our group at events like Rockville’s Hometown Holidays. Through our membership we continue to advocate for RedGate Park encouraging residents to complete the City’s annual budget survey.

In order to make the park more accessible to the community we improved our online presence. Wayne Breslyn guest starred on the Hey Rockville podcast to talk about RedGate Park. We created a Wikipedia page for the park. We also installed Chronologs in partnership with Croydon Creek Nature Center which included a $1,000 grant from Rockville Rotary to support the effort.

Through an ongoing partnership with the Rockville Weed Warriors we held monthly events aimed at protecting the native flora for RedGate Park from invasive species. Further, throughout the year, we have maintained and enhanced the Monarch Waystation as a collaborative project with Girl Scout Troop 3624. This report showcases our collective achievements, reflecting a dedication to ensuring RedGate Park remains a vibrant, accessible, and cherished resource for the community.

The City of Rockville has continued to maintain and improve the park, including obtaining a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for $400,000. With that grant the City of Rockville has planted 2,000 trees at RedGate park in 2024 with plans to plant another 1,000 trees in 2025
